World Water Day 2023 - The Benefits of Organic Cashmere

World Water Day 2023 - The Benefits of Organic Cashmere

What are the benefits of organic cashmere and how does it fit in with my values, you may be wondering?

The significance of these questions lies in one of the greatest resources on our planet…water. Water plays a crucial role in our organic clothing process.

"There is no life without water. Because we cannot produce water, we have a duty to conserve and protect the sources of water that sustain us." - Kofi Annan, former Secretary-General of the United Nations.

With World Water Day upon us, we wanted to share with you the importance of this precious natural gift and how it affects your lifestyle.

What is World Water Day?

World Water Day is an annual global event that focuses on the importance of freshwater and promotes the sustainable management of water supplies.

This conservation event is an opportunity to raise awareness about the importance of water and to encourage individuals, organizations and governments to take action to protect and conserve freshwater resources. It’s also a platform for advocating for water-related solutions, like organic farming.

When is World Water Day?

World Water Day is celebrated on March 22, 2023, just in time for April showers.

The World Water Day theme 2023 is water and climate change. The aim is to draw attention to the impact of climate change on freshwater resources and how water can be used as a tool to work against the effects of climate change.

The value of water - World Water Day facts

  • The UN estimates water demand will exceed supply by 2030, and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development projects that water demand will increase by 55% globally by 2050. (Central Solutions)
  • Agriculture accounts for around 70% of global water use, making it the largest user of freshwater resources. (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations)
  • One in three people globally do not have access to safe drinking water. (UNICEF, WHO)
  • Water scarcity and pollution are becoming leading causes of conflicts between communities and countries. (The Centre for Africa-Europe Relations)

As you can see, water plays a huge role in agriculture and, in turn, our drinking water. Collectively, we have an opportunity, as famed author Maya Angelou has stated, to “do better because we know better.”

How GOBI’s organic cashmere is better

At GOBI, we work closely with our nomadic Mongolian partners to source our highly prized cashmere wool. We own every step of the manufacturing process, therefore we know exactly how your treasured cashmere pieces are produced. We oversee the entire process from beginning to end, so we can keep a close eye on our organic methods.

Organic cashmere production helps to positively impact freshwater resources in several ways:

  • By minimizing the use of certain chemical dyes, organic cashmere production can help reduce water pollution and support the health of freshwater ecosystems.
  • Organic cashmere production promotes sustainable water management practices.
  • Organic farming practices help to mitigate climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • All of our organic pieces are undyed and unbleached to assure that no dyes or harsh bleach make it into our water supply.
